Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Dusty May’s Family Guide: Meet His Wife Anna and Their 3 Kids

Dallas Mavericks head coach Dusty May has built a family around the game he loves.

He met his wife, Anna May, in elementary school, and the two now have three sons who are all involved in basketball to some degree.

As their son, Charlie May, told Hour Detroit in 2025, “Most of our lives revolve around basketball. Holidays like Thanksgiving, we’re traveling to where games are. Christmas, we have maybe three days off.”

Prioritizing the sport makes sense — Dusty burst onto the national scene in 2023 when he miraculously led Florida Atlantic University to the Final Four, where his Owls lost on a buzzer-beater to San Diego State in the semifinals.

Michigan hired him two years later, and two of his sons eventually joined him in Ann Arbor. Dusty’s success at FAU translated immediately to Ann Arbor, as he led the Wolverines to a 19-win turnaround in year one and a national championship in year two, before the NBA came calling.

Anna May

Dusty and Anna May met as first graders at Eastern Greene Elementary School in Indiana and began dating in high school. They stayed together in college, despite going to different schools, dating long distance. At the time, Dusty served as a team manager under Hall of Famer Bob Knight at the University of Indiana and Anna went to rival Purdue University.

“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t love Dusty and have feelings for Dusty,” Anna told Sports Illustrated in March 2023.

The two married in 2000, the same year they graduated from college. Anna now works as an occupational therapist.

Jack May

Dusty and Anna May’s eldest son, Jack, was a walk-on at the University of Florida from 2020 to 2024. A four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, Jack appeared in 21 games during his Gators career, scoring 15 points. He graduated with a degree in Sport Management and now works for the NBA’s Miami Heat.
