England Player Jordan Henderson Hospitalized After Suffering Injury While Celebrating World Cup Win

England soccer player Jordan Henderson has been hospitalized after suffering an injury while celebrating the country’s historic World Cup win over Mexico.

After the Sunday, July 5, match in Mexico City, Henderson, 36, and the players went over to their fans behind a goal to sing “Wonderwall.” (The Oasis track has become England’s unofficial anthem during the iconic tournament.)

While celebrating, Henderson fell over an advertising board and remained down on the field. England captain Harry Kane saw what happened and motioned for first responders to assist.

“Hendo just fell over there and I think he’s OK, something to do with his arm,” Kane told BBC after the freak accident.

As a huddle was formed around him, Henderson began receiving medical treatment — including oxygen — before he was removed from the field on a stretcher.

“Mixed feelings also because I’m exhausted, of course, and emotional, but also sad because Jordan got injured,” England coach Thomas Tuchel told reporters after the game, per NBC News. “He injured his wrist. He’s at the moment in the hospital, so it’s a quite serious injury. And it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure, what’s going on. I just did the press and the doctor told me that he’s in [the] hospital.”

ESPN reported that Henderson stayed in Mexico City on Sunday with a member of the England entourage instead of flying back to the team’s training set-up in Kansas City, Missouri. One day later, The Athletic reported that Henderson would miss the remainder of the tournament and undergo surgery on his wrist.

“He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control,” England player Jude Bellingham said, referring to Henderson, per The Athletic. “I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”

While Henderson did not play against Mexico, he received a yellow card late in the game after becoming involved in a clash between Bellingham and Mexico’s Johan Vasquez.

After reigning victorious against Mexico on Sunday, England will now face off against Norway. The two teams are set to play at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 5 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 11.

Henderson, for his part, celebrated the team’s success in the tournament via Instagram.

“We keep building!! Into the next round 💪Congrats @harrykane all time leading scorer 🫡👏,” Henderson wrote in June.
