Liam Payne makes final TV appearance after his death in Netflix’s ‘Building the Band’

Liam Payne was going back to his roots before his tragic death in Argentina.
Netflix’s “Building the Band” trailer dropped Tuesday, marking the late singer’s final television appearance.
Payne served as a guest judge and advised singers on forming a band within the singing competition — something he knew plenty about given how One Direction formed on “The X Factor” in 2010.
Payne appears healthy and upbeat in the trailer alongside fellow guest judge Kelly Rowland. Joining them is Nicole Scherzinger, who acts as a judge and mentor.
The “Strip That Down” singer gives honest criticism to the competitors. At one point, he tells them they need to do a lot of work on their vocals and chemistry.
“I need to feel that connection between you guys,” he says.
He later draws on his own experience with One Direction, noting, “To have these bands put together is not normal, we [One Direction] were put together that way.”
“Building the Band,” hosted by Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, is based on the premise of 50 singers forming 6 bands without ever seeing each other and competing to become the next big music group. The singers are in charge of forming their own bands, going into individual sound booths where they can’t see the other artists, but they can hear them sing.
“Building the Band” premieres July 9 on Netflix.
Scherzinger was a guest judge on “The X Factor” during Payne’s season and was directly responsible for forming One Direction alongside judges Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. The trio chose to put Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson in a band together.
One Direction went on to reach stunning global success, and also launched the members’ solo careers. Styles has had the most critical and commercial success, winning the coveted Album of the Year Grammy in 2023 for “Harry’s House.”
Payne died in October 2024 after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Multiple drugs were found in his system.
He was 31 years old.
He left no will. His entire $32.2 million estate was placed in a trust for his 8-year-old son, Bear, whom he shared with Cheryl Cole.
