Ryan Murphy Says He Has Written a Script for a ‘Glee’ Reboot, Reached Out to Original Cast Members

Show creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Tonight at the Wednesday, September 23, premiere of American Horror Story season 13 that he just got finished penning a script for a revival of the hit musical comedy.

“I just finished the script an hour ago. We have a script. Brad [Falchuk] and Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” he said.

Not only is there a script, but Murphy, 60, confirmed he has reached out to some of the show’s original cast members. Glee starred the likes of Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Darren Criss and more. (The late Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, who died in 2013 and 2020, respectively, were also part of the cast.)

“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet. They all had a lot of questions, but they were all enthusiastic about the idea,” the prolific producer said. “Nobody’s read it. I don’t know … we’ll see. I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it.”

Glee originally aired on Fox for six seasons between 2009 and 2015.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said he was “considering” reviving the hit show.

“It’s something to consider. For many, many people now in their 20s, they grew up on that show and it meant something to them,” he told the outlet in August. “The music meant something. So, let’s kick it around and see what we get. It’s always about the story for me. What’s the story? Do I want to tell the story now? Sometimes I want to wait.”

Murphy added, “I’m considering a lot of stuff. To me, it’s always about how the scripts come in and what it costs. You have to be conscious about all of that. But because I have such great partners, I’m able to create things that give thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people jobs.”

Michele, who played Rachel Berry on all six seasons of Glee, weighed in on the potential revival in an interview with E! News earlier this month, hinting that she’d consider being part of it.

“I love Glee. I will always love Glee. I love Ryan Murphy,” she said. “[The show] just holds such a special place in my heart for me. So, I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
