Zac Efron secretly building dream home in massive remote Australia rainforest, developer reveals
Hollywood star Zac Efron has been revealed to be quietly living in Australia as he works hard to build his dream home.
It turns out Efron has been secretly living in Byron Bay as he develops the 128 hectare block of rainforest land in the Tweed Valley — about an hour inland from Byron — that he purchased back in 2020 for a discount price during Covid-19.
According to Daily Mail, development has been well underway for the past few months, and the actor has hired Australian environmental designer Joost Bakker to create the off-the-grid home that’s been dubbed: “Futurecave.”
While news of the development was confirmed last month after Bakker revealed planning had been approved, it was previously not known that Efron has been remaining in Australia during construction and keeping a low-profile.
“Excited to get started on Zac’s house!” the designer wrote on Instagram last month.
Sources close to the Hollywood star have claimed that he is looking to relocate Down Under permanently after listing his Los Angeles mansion for sale.
The property intends to be a self-sustaining, zero-waste home, covered with plant ecosystems designed to support insects and help other species thrive.
“He just loves the Australian mentality and attitude, and he just wants to spend time in nature,” Bakker told Homes To Love.
“We’re using the building to get a lot of endangered insects and species back on track,” Joost shared in a later interview with Domain. “So we can actually use the building to create habitat rather than take away from it.”
“For the past year we’ve experimented with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment. Hemp: possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring.”
Plans show a series of interconnected pods linked by walkways, providing approximately 9,000 square feet of living space that also features a gym and rooftops covered in endless amounts of vegetation.
Meanwhile, it comes just weeks after it was announced that Efron and distributor A24 are set to team up for a TV project — a new take on the novel that formed the basis of the 1987 cult film Angel Heart.
The project, made in collaboration with HBO will follow a down-and-out NYC paparazzo, who makes his living finding and photographing people who don’t want to be found.
Efron’s character is hired by a mysterious man to find a woman who has gone missing, but the deeper he digs to find her, the more it looks like a group of powerful elites, and maybe something supernatural, are covering up the disappearance.
